A task’s status updates itself, automatically, from the pull request. Sprints have been replaced by an optional weekly call. There’s no sprint planning either — you have an LLM generate a one-page design doc for the feature, and that’s the whole ceremony.
Agents work the codebase autonomously. They write the tests. They review the code. They open small pull requests and merge them.
Programmers are involved only in the big architectural decisions, the designs, and in giving feedback to the agents.
The new roles
Oh — and the new review types. A whole taxonomy of reviewer roles bloomed where the standup used to be. The security reviewer. The domain reviewer. The code-style reviewer. And so on, and so on.
We didn’t remove the process. We just moved it downstream of the merge button and handed it to humans wearing lanyards that say Reviewer.
Agile is done. Scrum is done.
It turned out they weren’t flexible enough.
There’s a certain poetry to that. The methodology whose entire pitch was agility — being able to turn on a dime, embrace change, respond faster than the plan — got out-turned, out-changed, and out-paced. By the thing it was supposed to be good at.
But there’s good news, even here. Especially here.
The Scrum and Agile coaches can now sell the very same services for more — by rebranding as AI Engineer / Coach. They’ll roll out AI on an aggressive timeline. They’ll run a workshop. There will be a Miro board.
Everyone wins. Everything got better with AI. Again.
